On November 9, 2016, California voters legalized recreational marijuana for adult use by responding yes to Proposition 64, the California Marijuana Legalization Initiative. Supporters referred to the initiative as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. Proposition 64 made it legal for individuals to use and grow marijuana for personal use.

Who Oversees the California Recreational Marijuana Industry?

The Department of Cannabis Control of California (DCC) was created on July 1, 2021. This agency will take place of the previous three overseeing agencies; CalCannabis, Manufactured Cannabis Safety Branch (MCSB), and The Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC). DCC regulates the: growing of cannabis plants, the manufacturing of cannabis products, the transportation and tracking of cannabis goods throughout the state, the sale of cannabis goods, any events where cannabis is sold or used, and the labeling of goods sold at a retail level.

What Kind of Marijuana Establishment Licenses are available?

California Recreational Marijuana Sale Restrictions

The regulation of marijuana sales has defined purchase limitations for consumers. A consumer may not purchase more than 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis, 8 grams of cannabis concentrate, including cannabis concentrate contained in cannabis products, or 6 immature cannabis plants.
