New York Registered Organizations

New York has an interesting cannabis business structure. Each manufacturing and dispensing facility must be a Registered Organization. Each registered organization is permitted to have up to four dispensing facilities. Medical cannabis products must be produced in an indoor secure facility located in New York State. This may include using a greenhouse facility.

Each Registered Organization can produce their own brands of medical cannabis products. The brands must include at least one low THC content, one high CBD content, and one with equal amounts of both THC and CBD.

To protect the public’s health and safety, New York Registered Organizations must meet high product quality standards. Final products must be tested for their cannabinoid profile, as well as for various contaminants and pesticides. Specifically, the regulations require testing each batch of product for contaminants, cannabinoids, and consistency.

New York Registered Organizations must also label all products with specific information. Registered organizations are also required to provide a department-approved package safety insert to patients when dispensing medical cannabis.
