Recreational Marijuana in VT
On October 7, 2020 Gov. Phil Scott announced that he would allow S. 54, a bill to regulate and tax cannabis sales to become law. This made Vermont the 11th state to regulate adult-use cannabis sales. The Cannabis Control Board was established through Act 164 in 2020 for the purpose of safely, equitably implementing and administering the rules and regulating adult-use cannabis in Vermont. Retail sales are expected to begin in the fall of 2022.
Medical Marijuana in VT
In 2004 Vermont adopted an Act Relating to Marijuana Use by Persons with Severe Illness (No. 135). The Department of Public Safety established the Marijuana Registry Program to implement the provisions of 18 V.S.A. Chapter 86, Therapeutic Use of Cannabis, as it pertains to registered patients, caregivers, and dispensaries. The Vermont Marijuana Registry (VMR) reviews and processes applications, issuing registry identification cards to residents of Vermont with verified debilitating medical conditions and evaluate the compliance of registered dispensaries.
